Overview: Test background and purpose
• The test goal is to evaluate the bandwidth stability and delay fluctuation of Vietnam's CN2 link during the evening peak period (20:00-23:00).• Test content covers ICMP delay, UDP/TCP throughput (iperf3), packet loss rate and MTR route tracing.
• Scenarios of concern include overseas users visiting mainland China, domestic users visiting Vietnam sites, and cross-border CDN back-to-origin.
• Comparative analysis of the impact of DDoS protection and traffic cleaning on peak performance.
• The target readers are operation and maintenance engineers, VPS/host purchasing decision-makers and network administrators.
2.
Test environment and tool description
• Test node: Data center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The operator provides CN2 direct connection back to the backbone node in Guangzhou, China.• Representative tested host configuration (example): 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, NVMe 80 GB, 100 Mbps guaranteed bandwidth, supporting 1 Gbps bursts.
• Test tools: iperf3 (TCP/UDP throughput), ping (ICMP delay), mtr (continuous routing and packet loss), wrk (HTTP concurrency test).
• The test period is divided into low peak (02:00-05:00), regular (10:00-17:00) and peak (20:00-23:00). Five complete measurements are made in each period.
• Test conditions: Turn off host local traffic shaping, eliminate local task interference, and record the upstream link utilization and BGP path during the same period.
3.
Key indicators and collection methods
• Throughput rate (bandwidth): TCP/UDP peak and average values measured using iperf3, in Mbps.• Round Trip Latency (RTT): Use ping to record min/average/max latency and jitter (ms).
• Packet loss rate: Statistics of packet loss percentage within 1 minute based on mtr and UDP test packets.
• Path stability: The packet loss and hop count of each hop output by mtr determine whether there is congestion at intermediate nodes.
• Service availability: Response time distribution and error rate under concurrent HTTP stress testing (wrk), combined with DDoS protection logs to compare performance when comparing abnormal traffic.
4.
Actual measurement data table (representing a Vietnamese CN2 VPS)
| Period | TCP average throughput (Mbps) | ICMP average delay (ms) | Packet loss rate (%) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low peak 03:00 | 96 | 28 | 0.0 | Link is idle and stable |
| Regular 14:00 | 88 | 32 | 0.2 | Slight fluctuation |
| Peak 20:30 | 73 | 52 | 0.8 | Bandwidth is occupied, delay increases |
| Peak 22:15 | 65 | 78 | 1.6 | Short-term packet loss and jitter are obvious |

Case analysis: real customer review
• Case background: An e-commerce company set up a main station for the CN2 return line in Vietnam, with peak traffic concentrated between 20:00-23:00.• Configuration example: The main site uses 2 load balancing backends, each with 4 vCPU/8GB/100Mbps, and the front end uses Cloud CDN back-to-source acceleration.
• Symptoms: During peak periods, user payment response delays occur, some requests time out, and the order interface fails occasionally.
• Troubleshooting process: It was confirmed through mtr that the link from Vietnam to Guangzhou experienced third-hop packet loss around 20:30, and the operator-side link utilization rate reached 92%.
• Solution: In the short term, increase the connection pool and retry, and enable distributed cache; in the long term, negotiate with the CN2 service provider to expand the capacity and add multiple BGP backup links and CDN back-to-origin optimization.
6.
About the impact of CDN and DDoS defense on peak performance
• CDN local caching can significantly reduce return-to-origin bandwidth usage, and can reduce return-to-origin bandwidth requirements by 30%-70% at peak times, directly improving CN2 link pressure.• In the actual measured e-commerce case, after turning on edge caching, the back-to-origin bandwidth during peak periods dropped from the original peak value of 120 Mbps to less than 50 Mbps.
• DDoS protection (cleaning) will give priority to discarding malicious packets when attacked, and normal traffic will be protected. However, improper cleaning strategies may cause misjudgments, resulting in short-term availability degradation.
• Recommendation: Combine traffic fingerprints, threshold alarms and cloud cleaning services to pre-set peak whitelist and rate limiting policies.
• Operator communication: Sign the packet loss and delay upper limit clauses in the SLA with the CN2 service provider, and require traffic peak warnings and link expansion commitments.
7.
Conclusion and optimization suggestions
• Conclusion: Vietnam CN2 performs well during off-peak hours, but bandwidth decreases, latency and packet loss increase during evening peak hours. Peak performance depends on the upstream link and operator scheduling.• Short-term optimization: Use CDN cache, optimize TCP concurrency and Keepalive, and add retry and circuit breaker mechanisms at the application layer.
• Mid-term strategy: Deploy multiple return links (CN2 + ordinary links) to realize traffic diversion, and cooperate with intelligent DNS or BGP policy switching.
• Long-term investment: Negotiate clear SLAs with service providers, deploy edge cleaning and elastic bandwidth resource pools to cope with traffic bursts.
• Testing suggestions: Regularly use iperf3, mtr and real business stress testing (wrk/ab) at different times for regression testing, record trends and communicate with service providers for improvements.
